It Takes a Team, Meet the Leaders of Silver in the City

Kristin Kohn (she/her), "Head Honcho" (Owner & Jewelry Buyer)
Gets distracted by shiny things.

What’s your go-to Mass Ave local eats or coffee spot?  What do you get?
Mass Ave - Coat Check Coffee - I love the Iced Matcha with Ginger and Oatmilk and any of their baked goods.  Right now, I'm also loving the refreshing Tavern Freeze (its like a Paloma slushie) from Tavern at the Point matched with the smoked turkey and bacon chop salad.  If I'm in a pizza mood, it's got to be Bazbeaux - it's a Mass Ave legend.

Who’s your favorite maker, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
I don't think it's fair to play favorites, but I love my connection with Evan Knox.  I am almost always wearing a piece of her jewelry, I love her unique style and fearlessness to express herself.  We've been connecting over gemstones, raising sons, national parks, and baked goods for over 15 years.  A visit with Evan can stretch most of the day and I love it - plus, because she makes mostly one-of-a-kind pieces, it's an entirely new collection to peruse every time.  I'm not sure who owns more, Evan, me or my mom!

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
Silver in the City means building community and making everyone feel welcome to be a part of it.

Andrea Burris (she/her), "Maestro of Merchandise" (Homeside Buyer)
I love moss and puppies and brown shoes.  I will always rock the jeans under a dress look.

Who are your favorite makers, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
Oh, I have so many!  I order from so many vendors that I adore.  I love candles!  Right now I am into Ani & Co’s Myrrh. With its high notes of tea tree, it’s perfect for the summer.
I am also all about the cold brew with a dash of Goldfinch Syrup from Meadowland all day every day.  I couldn’t resist the new insulated tumblers from United by Blue to keep it extra icy.
Stationery!  OMG where to start?  I love a good notebook/planner.  Design Works has so many options and I love them all.  Also literally anything Rifle Paper Co!
Blue Q!  It’s one of my favorite times of the year when the new Blue Q catalog arrives.  I just sit in my office giggling all day.
Paper Parasol Press, Tiny Deer Studio, Have A Nice Day, and the list goes on and on. They all have a great mix of stationery and home goods. They are also small companies that we love to support.

Fill in the Blank: No gift is complete without a ______ from Silver in the City.
SUNCATCHER!  No gift is complete without a Suncatcher from Silver in the City.

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
Silver in the City is community to me. This place has taught me so much.

“You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.” ― Angela Davis

Who’s your favorite maker, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
Oh my, I literally love it all!  Danica/Now Designs does an excellent job of designing and curating their collections.  They have a wide variety of goods from eco-friendly products, to cosmetic bags, to kitchenwares, with new products coming out all the time.  I use many of their Swedish Dishcloths, Bee’s Wraps and trinket dishes.

Jewelry-wise, I’m heart eyes for Salame Jewelry Designs and Sun & Selene.  Salame’s gemstones are consistently jaw-dropping and photograph beautifully.  Sun & Selene is simple, soft and stunning, all their pieces add the perfect touch to any outfit.  Many of their pieces come in Gold, which we don’t carry a whole lot of, but when we do I jump right to it.  Love me some gold!

What’s your go-to gift from Silver in the City?
Well Told drinkware for adults and Rainbow Twirlers for the kiddos (and big kiddos)!  Well Told is mainly a collection of glassware with the map and coordinates of Indianapolis etched or printed onto the surface.  It's the perfect gift for any local or homesick Hoosier.  And well, Rainbow Twirlers are basically magic in the tips of your fingers.

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
To me, Silver in the City is more than just Jewelry, Housewares and Whatnots.  It's community, a place to share ideas, perspectives and knowledge unfamiliar to our own to help guide us towards a better future for all.  With so many laughs, pretty products, and genuine love along the way.

“Excuse me, I have to defuse this bomb." - Nancy Drew

Who are your favorite makers, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
MUDLove!  I have the Indiana State Seal Mug (in Jade) and it is my favorite coffee mug I’ve ever owned.  They’re handmade in Indiana and in partnership with Water for Good, every mug provides one week of clean water to someone in need!

What’s your go-to gift from Silver in the City?
Swedish Dishcloths by Now Designs!  They’re cute AF and way better than using paper towels!

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
Silver in the City means so much more than just a place to buy gifts. It’s a safe place to grow. A place that accepted me before I accepted myself and pushed me to take a closer look at how I could create that space for others both here at work and in my personal life.

Claire Shipley (she/her), "Go-To Goddess" (General Manager)
Let's hang out and eat pizza, craft, and sing show tunes while surrounded by houseplants.

What’s your go-to Mass Ave local eats or coffee spot?  What do you get?
I LOVE Ralston's.  Obviously, you'll need to start with the 'Bavarian Bites' (pretzel nugs that will make your carb-loving heart sing).  You really can't go wrong with anything on their menu, but the Recession Sliders are a favorite of mine.

Who are your favorite makers, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
Home side:  Paddywax, especially the Vista Candle in Cactus Flower & Aloe.  Run, don't walk to get this dreamy scent.

Jewels:  HAWKHOUSE.  I love this woman-owned and run jewelry company!  The copper is such an unusual material and their stones are so cool.  I have a mood ring (obviously), and an Opal ring!

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
To me, Silver in the City is inspiration and encouragement.  Standing up for what you believe in and bringing light and attention to people and matters that are important.  Even before I worked here, I loved all of the products and the amazing way the store was run and stood for what they believed in.  Since working here, I have grown so much as a leader, colleague, and person.  This place is magic, and it is the most incredible honor to be part of something so special.

Beck Scholl (they/them), Online Fulfillment
They have a plan but not a clue.

What’s your go-to Mass Ave local eats or coffee spot?  What do you get?
I love going to Moar Tea for an afternoon snack.  My fave: Peach Tea Boba and a spicy tuna onigiri, you can’t go wrong!

Who are your favorite makers, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
Ash & Chess!  We love a loud and proud queer power couple, I have so many stickers and one of my favorite art prints in my house is by them!

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
To me, Silver in the City is synonymous with Indy as a whole. I started working here only two months after I moved to the city and I feel like it embodies the feeling of community and creativity at the heart of Indianapolis and the people that live here. <3

Kelly (Kells) Williams (she/her), "Boss Babe" (Mass Ave, Indianapolis Shop Manager)
Have you seen my water bottle?

What’s your go-to Mass Ave local eats or coffee spot?  What do you get?
The Eagle!  I like to get the chicken sandwich and whatever light and local beer they have on tap.

Who are your favorite makers, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
J & I is my favorite jewelry designer and maker.  I love the details: mixed metals, craftsmanship, and their labradorite pieces are GORGEOUS.  I’m also a big fan of the more masculine styles of Corkcicle drink holder-tumblers and Arctican are must-haves.

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
Everything.  I earn my living here, build relationships with co-workers and employees, meet cool strangers, find out about different events going on in town and different artists around the country.  It’s also my go-to gift store.  I get a coupon almost every other week because someone in my life needs a little joy (or myself, I can’t lie, I love to treat myself).

Daily affirmations: I am smart. I am loved. I am worthy. I am a 72 foot sentient lizard.

Who are your favorite makers, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
Hawkhouse is the first thing I always show customers on our jewelry side because I am OBSESSED! I have a gorgeous citrine necklace that I bought and I’m constantly getting compliments on it! I also really love all of the amazing things that our staff makes that are sold at Silver. We have some really talented artists amongst our team and it’s just so amazing getting to see their talents supported and admired.

What’s your go-to gift from Silver in the City?
Oh man, my favorite gift?!  That’s so hard. We have so many good ones and I am incredibly indecisive so I just buy *✧・゚all of the things. *✧・ Personally, I’m a big coffee mug fan.  I feel like that’s the first thing I go for when I’m gift shopping.  Like, they can basically be anything you want them to be.  Bowl? Paintbrush holder??  Planter???  I love a good multipurpose item.  Plus it’s really fun to build themes around your mug!

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
SITC is a lot of things to me! But I think what stands out the most is that it serves as a place to connect with people in the community.  I’ve worked as a barista my entire adult life up until I started at Silver.  One of the things I always loved most about making someone’s morning coffee was getting to connect with them during those few moments, that’s not something that I’m losing out on here!

“There’s one rule that I know of, babies- Damn it, you’ve got to be kind” - Kurt Vonnegut

What’s your go-to Main St. local eats or coffee spot?  What do you get?
Leviathan Bakehouse for a coffee and a sweet pastry.  I would recommend any single menu item from them!  I have yet to try something I don’t love.

What’s your go-to gift from Silver in the City?
No gift is complete without a sticker or magnet from SITC. All of my friends and family get one of these when I’m gifting!

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
Silver in the City is a place to be yourself. I have always admired the way this small business has used its voice in big ways. They do not shy away from issues happening in our community, and the world!  After being a frequent shopper for years at SITC, I was beyond excited to join this team.

Nick Rassi (he/him), "Queen of the North" (Main Street, Carmel Shop Manager)
I'm a vegan bookworm and my cats are the most important part of my life.

What’s your go-to Main St. local eats or coffee spot?  What do you get?
Pad Thai and Indie Coffee Roasters!  I get Red Curry with Tofu from Pad Thai and the Cold Brew Coffee from Indie Coffee Roasters.

Who are your favorite makers, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
Local maker People for Urban Progress (PUP) is my favorite.  I love their story, and I love their products even more.  I've had a weekender bag for years.  It's my go-to bag for traveling or spending days by the pool.

What’s your go-to gift from Silver in the City?
My go-to gift from Silver in the City is our vegan cookbooks.  Lots of my friends and family are plant-based eaters; a good cookbook can really reenergize your love for cooking!  My favs are Plants Only Kitchen and Frugal Vegan.

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
I love working for Silver in the City.  I've been here since 2013 and watched our stores grow and change into a really remarkable part of the community.  I'm so proud of the work our team puts in to make our space inclusive, progressive, and supportive.

Kate Vonderohe (she/her), Shift Leader (Main St., Carmel)
Tell your dog I said hi. :)

What’s your go-to Main St. local eats or coffee spot?  What do you get?
Oh gosh, such a tough question.  There’s so much good food around us!  Java House is newer to us and it’s been great.  They have great coffee and a good atmosphere.  My personal favorite thing to get has been the “in a minute”, and I like to get it frozen.

Who are your favorite makers, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
I adore Evan Knox.  Her pieces are always so beautifully delicate.  I’ve gotten a few pieces of hers over the years.  I’ve bought one of her single-pearl necklaces, as well as some of her wrap-around earrings with multi-colored sapphire.  She’s also been a great artist for finding gifts for friends and family- I’ve gotten gifts for my mom and sister from her collection as well.

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
Honestly, it truly has become like a second family to me.  I’ve been here for 5 years now, so it’s become like a second home too, as I’ve gotten more and more familiar with the store.  I also get to work with such a kind, amazing, and collaborative team that makes coming to work that much more fun.  It’s also so comforting to know that I work at a company that shares my same values, and is active in the community fighting for what’s important.

Diya Harding (she/her), Shift Leader (Main St., Carmel)
No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted.

What’s your go-to Main St. local eats or coffee spot?  What do you get?
No label at the Table, Shelly the owner is super nice, I enjoy treating myself to a Vegan Cake Pop or The Elvis Muffin.

Who are your favorite makers, why are they your favorite & what do you rock by them?
The Ecologie line by Now Designs is my favorite vendor that we carry, their Swedish dishcloths really help clean up little messes at home and they help save paper towels which makes them so good for the planet!

What does Silver in the City mean to you?
Silver in the city means celebrating our community and all that it offers.  Working here has been such a rewarding experience for me, and each day, I learn to welcome each individual with inclusivity and kindness.
